Visual Species
Since the dawn of mankind, we have been a visual species. Our survival and evolution depended on it.
Even in the most primitive version of humans, what we saw helped us to make a thousand rapid calculations, allowing us to understand our environment at any moment, keep us safe, guide us to food, allow us to kill for meat and, let’s face it, choose a partner and procreate. The visual sense and what is has allowed us to achieve is immeasurable.
Widespread reading and writing are a comparatively new development. It wasn’t until the 1850’s that more than half the population of the UK could lay claim to some degree of literacy. In the grand scheme of things most of the world has been literate for no more than a blink on the eye, but we have been creating images and responding to them in some way since apes became more upright.
Of course, good, effective, informative writing plays a very important role as it delivers detail and depth which means quality content and online traffic and rankings. But the visual strike, the optical impact is where that first impression is made and as is well known, you can’t make a first impression twice.
Catch the eye, draw attention, pique interest, create fascination, set a scene, ask a question, provide an answer, all of these things can be achieved in a split second by the effective visual image. And as the well-known adage tells us; A picture can speak a thousand words.
An image sets out your stall, it states your credibility, it can speaks of what you do, in can create a desire for viewers to find out what you do. It can stamp authority, it can amuse, it can provoke… If you get it right, it is absolutely invaluable to what your business is, what it does, who it reaches and how it performs.
